The Alismataceae encompasses 17 genera and ca. 120 species of herbaceous aquatic plants found nearly world-wide, but with most species in the Northern Hemisphere. Annual or perennial. The stems are rhizomatous, stoloniferous, or cormose. The leaves are linear, ovate or arrow-like. The flowers are solitary or arranged in racemes, panicles, or umbels; each has three sepals and three petals, white, pink, or purple. The fruits are achenes or follicles.
